A spate of fire accidents has been recorded in Lagos in the past two months and unfortunately, the number seems to be growing. Some of these accidents are caused by negligence which could have prevented an unfortunate incident. The effect of these fire accidents is loss of lives and properties.
Prevention is way cheaper, better and more reasonable than cure. Here are 10 ways to prevent fire accident in your Lagos home.
Turn Off All Appliances
Lagosians are always in a hurry to go about their daily lives leaving a lot of things unattended to. Whether power is available or not, it is important to make sure all electrical appliances are turned off when going out as an upsurge of power can result in a fire.
Repair/Change Faulty Appliances
The culture of managing or making do with what is available should not be employed when dealing with faulty appliances. Faulty sockets that spark when in use should be changed instead of managing it. This is financial reasonable than having to replace items destroyed in a fire accident.
Report Faulty Electricity Metres/Poles
A lot of homes in Lagos still use the old electricity metres or the old wooden poles which have seen better days. In order to prevent disaster, it’s safer to immediately report to the nearest Power Holding Company of Nigeria office to get replacement
Don’t Fill Generator While It’s Still Running
Some Lagosians have the habit of refilling a generator with petrol while it’s still running probably because they don’t want their television or other appliances to go off. This can be deadly as the already charged generator can be ignited when it comes in contact with fuel.
Don’t Place Candles Near Inflammable Items
Some Lagosians are not always conscious about places they place candles. Some people carelessly place candles on tables or on carpets instead of using chandeliers or other non-inflammable items. A candle placed on a table can fall and result in fire.
Don’t go to sleep with a candle on
Regardless of how safe the location of a candle is, it is safer to put the light out before going to sleep. Candles are prone to causing fire because they don’t have coverings. It’s better to use a battery torch on if necessary.
Handle Gas Cookers With Care
When using a gas cooker, care must be taken to follow safety measures. Gas is very volatile and requires that a user take precaution when turning the knob. Gas cylinders should also be examined for leakages too.
Use Ashtray
If you must smoke in the room, make sure you place the stub in an ash tray. You can then dispose the ash appropriately later. Be careful not to drop lighted cigarettes as the ember can ignite a fire.
Avoid ‘Resting’ When Cooking
Due to the issue of traffic in Lagos, some people return home late and tired but still insist on cooking. It is important to know that one should avoid the tempting rest that comes after one has placed the food on the stove. One should try to stay awake at all cost and not get onto the bed or couch to rest as one can drift to a deep sleep.
Take Matches Away From The Reach Of Children
Children are very curious and like to try things out. Avoid letting children play with matches or lighters. Make sure they don’t have access to fuel and other combustible items.
